Earth, Wind and Fire (sometimes stylized as EWF) was formed in Chicago in 1970 by singer, songwriter, and musician Maurice White. The band’s been through many line up changes over the years and it currently consists of Philip Bailey (vocals, conga, percussion, kalimba), Verdine White (bass, percussion, vocals), Ralph Johnson (drums, percussion, vocals), B. David Whitworth (percussion and vocals), Myron McKinley (keyboards, musical director), John Paris (drums, vocals), Philip Bailey, Jr. (vocals, percussion), Morris O'Connor (lead guitar, vocals), and Serg Dimitrijevic (rhythm guitar, vocals). Their musical style can be best described as a blend of rhythm and blues, soul, funk, jazz, disco, pop, rock, psychedelia (a range of popular music styles and genres influenced by the 1960s culture of people who used psychedelic drugs to experience visual and auditory hallucinations, synesthesia and altered states of consciousness). They’ve had a stellar career with 21 studio albums, 4 live albums, 17 compilation albums, 19 video albums, and 62 singles. They’ve received many accolades (including 7 Grammy Awards) and former President Barack Obama invited them to perform at the White House for the first social event of the new administration.
