The band was formed in Montreal in 2001 by guitarists Win Butler and Josh Deu. The band’s been through many line up changes over the years and it currently consists of Win, Régine, Richard Reed Parry, William Butler, Tim Kingsbury, and Jeremy Gara. Their musical style is best described as a blend of indie rock (a genre of alternative rock that originated in the United States and the United Kingdom in the 1980s, encapsulating the genres chamber pop, indie pop, lo fi, math rock, neo psychedelia, post punk revival, sadcore, and shoegazing) and art rock (a subgenre of rock music that generally reflects a challenging or avant-garde approach to rock, and is often distinguished by the use of electronic effects and easy listening textures far removed from the propulsive rhythms of early rock). They’ve had a stellar career with 5 studio albums, 17 singles, and 3 extended plays. They’ve received many accolades including 2 BRIT Awards, 1 Grammy Award, 10 Juno Awards, 1 Meteor Music Award, 3 NME Awards, 5 PLUG Awards, and 2 Polaris Music Prizes.
